Halloween is Here

Have you been haunted?  Ghosts attacks out of the blue... night time visit from the sugar witch?  That time of year is finally upon us.  Costume decisions have been made - haunted house tickets purchased and candy eaten.

Halloween this year is on Friday.  This is such a rare occurrence that it is worth a long and well researched think piece.  Let me break it down in 3 steps:

  1. Vegan Halloween Candy!  That's right since you have Saturday and Sunday to recover from this year's holiday go all out and indulge. While the volume of candies might increase be sure to keep your hedonism sustainable get your sugar high with 100% Milk Free, Peanut Free, Tree Nut Free, Gluten Free, Egg Free, Soy Free, Sesame Free, No Artificial Colors and Flavors ! 2. Celebrate and  party poly traditional since you will be exhausted from the work week ghostride the exhaustion into a lively weekend. Also keep in mind that as always Halloween will also be 1 day before day of the dead. Since Hallow's eve falls on Friday and All souls Day is November 1 you can keep the rager going.   So you  go all out and enjoy Friday night in a frivolous costumer while bringing it back to the haunting and hellish detail of Day of the Dead. If you are in the LA are Self Help           Graphics Art annual bask is open to the public.   Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG) is proud to present its 52nd Annual Día de los Muertos season in partnership with the Office of Los Angeles County Board Supervisor Hilda L. Solis. The celebration will take place on Saturday, November 1, 2025 from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM at East LA Civic Center Park, which will be preceded and followed by a series of related events across Los Angeles. This year’s Día de los Muertos season honors the tradition of remembering one’s ancestors and loved ones while embracing the organization's commitment to arts and social justice. The main celebration will feature traditional altars honoring community members, including those lost by systemic violence and the recent LA fires. Altars will also honor activists who have passed away and the social change they incited, creating a space of co-existence between the living and the dead that is inspired by the spirit of activism. The main celebration will be preceded by a 2:00 PM procession in collaboration with Mujeres de Maiz, in which local dancers, poets, and musicians will guide attendees on from Boyle Heights to East LA Civic Center Park, where the main celebration will take place. Through these events, Self Help Graphics hopes to nurture a sacred space of multi-generational connections where community and creativity are intertwined. “52 is a sacred number. Self Help Graphics & Art is marking the completion of a calendar round or xiuhmolpilli (a bundle of 52 years in the sovereign timekeeping traditions of Nahuatleca cultures in Anahuac). The communities of SHG are consciously marking this time of completion, transformation and renewal, in the dance of life in Yaangna. Cultivating and creating this public, community centered Dia de los Muertos celebration in unceded Tongva territory, has, is and will continue to be a way to honor our ancient traditions and keep them alive with respectful innovation, addressing the present moment together,” said Endy Bernal, Board Chair, Self Help Graphics. “This sacred 52nd, xiuhmolpilli, Day of the Dead celebration is a testament to the cultural strength that simultaneously keeps us rooted and helps us grow through the daily, seasonal and millennial challenges as well as joys that we live with. Day of the Dead is an invitation for all of us to recall and celebrate our diversity and interconnectedness as humanity, as part of Nature, to recall our common human right to dignity in life and in death.”     Untitled (690 x 862 px) (1).jpg
  3.  For those traveling on Halloween weekend - here are the rules for making through TSA in a costume.  Since this year's Halloween will presumably take place during a government shut down it may involve less TSA time. Yes, you can go through TSA in a costume during Halloween, but be aware of certain restrictions: put on your costume after security to avoid potential delays, as elements like masks, full-face paint, and certain props could trigger a pat-down or be prohibited. Weapons, including fake ones, are not allowed in carry-on bags and must be checked. Liquids like fake blood must follow the TSA's 3-1-1 rule (3.4 ounces or less in a quart-sized bag).
