Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Hempmeh
Welcome to October - Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here is a list of resources for making sure you minimize your breast cancer risk with early detection and stay aware of Risk Factors. Remember that there are several risk factors for breast cancer. Some we can definitely make a dent in through behavioral impact. Here are the top ten Breast Cancer Risk Factors! Which ones do you perceive as very controllable to not controllable at all really?
- Being a woman: 99% of breast cancers occur in women. Increasing age: The risk of breast cancer increases as you get older.
- Dense breast tissue: Having a higher proportion of glandular and fibrous tissue rather than fatty tissue increases risk.
-
Hormonal Factors: Longer exposure to hormones like estrogen can increase risk, influenced by:
- Starting periods before age 12.
- Starting menopause after age 55
- Never having biological children
- Having your first child after age 35
- Physical Activity: A sedentary lifestyle increases risk, while regular exercise helps lower it.
- Weight: Being overweight or obese, especially after menopause, raises your risk.
- Alcohol Consumption: Frequent or heavy alcohol use increases the risk of breast cancer.
- Hormone Therapy: The use of certain combined hormone replacement therapies after menopause can increase risk
- Childbirth Choices: Not breastfeeding, or having your first child after a certain age, are risk factors.
Not feeling to thrilled that I possess a few of these risk factors. However I have completely cut out alcohol from my fun and beverage profile so maybe that will help! Also having mammograms every year help with early detection which makes cancer treatable and survivable. This disease is very common and should not be a death sentence.
